My family and I have been coming here for years. This place offers an array of authentic Mediterranean food choices that are extremely healthy and generally not available anywhere else in the Charleston area. They also offer a 1/2lb burger with seasoned fries (you may want to ask for extra seasoning if you're into seasonings like me) for those wanting something less exotic. A children's menu is also available. Desserts include Basboseh (bread like and very good), Baklava, and Cannoli. Hookah is also available for those so interested. The cashiers are mostly from Russia which is cool and the owner is from the Middle East and is very nice. The actual atmosphere of the restaurant feels Mediterranean as there are lots of architectural details and decorations reminiscent of that part of the world. If you have the time, it's fun to sit at a table in the dining room alongside one of the glass walls where you can leisurely watch pedestrians, bicyclists, and cars go by while taking in the beautiful Family Circle Cup tennis center just across the street.

My girlfriend and I went there for lunch. We love Mediterranean food and eat it all the time. We've tried a lot of the different options around Charleston. We thought that this Alibaba that would be similar to the one in Mount Pleasant... Not the case. I don't think they are owned by the same people, the menus are completely different. I got the gyro platter- meat wasn't too warm, but tasted ok. Pita was bagged store bought and toasted, hummus was good!

Their food is so good. Even though I get the same thing every single time I go there. I get the gyro platter. The gyro is so juicy and good. They give you a lot of food to fill you up. I try different sides mostly. But my favorite is the cucumber salad. Always clean and always busy.

Got a 4 side plate today. Was really in the mood for fresh Healthy food. I had the roasted chicken and veggies, the tabouli, spicy cabbage, and tunasi basmati. OMG! I don't believe the day will come when I am disappointed in Ali Baba's. Since we've moved here, this has been my BIGGEST food score. I've never had Mediterranean before these past 2 weeks. I'm so glad I tried it. If you want fresh, local, healthy, well thought out food, this is your place. Definitely my new favorite.

Yum! Yum! Yum! When you walk in, there is an entire deli case of amazing dishes. I had such a difficult time deciding which to choose. I ended up deciding on beef kabobs with penne pasta salad side. Neither choice disappointed. I highly recommend this place for lunch or dinner. Just be prepared if you go for lunch it may take your full hour if they're busy to wait to order, wait for food, and get out of there. But you wouldn't want to rush such an amazing meal anyway. It's also worth noting that they make gluten free pita bread to order upon request! Opa!

I had the beef gyro w a side of red pepper hummus. The gyro was good but the pita was hard. Same can be said for the pita that came with the hummus, it was soft when it first came out and then became hardened as it cooled, much like it had been microwaved.

The food test so good. I am vegetarian so I tried Falafal sandwich which was really good.

Happy to report this place is delicious on a consistent basis. A belly full of Mediterranean food makes for one happy Greek girl!

I have been looking forward to trying Ali Baba so I finally decided to order take-out! I ordered the Chicken Gyro ($7). But, I was bummed that it didn't come with a side.... All of the sides looked amazing but I was too cheap to shell out another $3 for one... Anyways... When I first opened my sandwich I thought "Man, that is too much tzatziki sauce" but as I ate my sandwich the sauce disappeared...which made me sad.... I felt like this sandwich was an emotional roller coaster..which could have been prevented by equally distributing the sauce. So overall, the Chicken Gyro was just okay. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was inviting. I will be back to sample other menu items.

We tried: hummus - delicious and smooth chicken shwarma - huge portion, spicy chicken w/stewed veggies, this could benefit from something fresh, maybe a cucumber tomato salad chicken wrap with salad and fries - good, basic wrap, can't go wrong The place is more deli style than restaurant. We ordered then went to sit outside and our food was brought out. The girls working there were talking smack the whole time, always a pleasure to know you'll be gossiped about when you leave. I'd recommend getting something to go for a picnic. We paid $25 for our three items and 1 soda.

Wow! This place is great! Food is amazing! Sit in or to go! Small shop! Staff is amazingly friendly! Everyone orders at the counter and either gets a table number or waits for to go order. Usually 10-15 mins depending... What you ordered/when! But you can call it in! Very close to hotels on Daniel Island. I'm a regular when I'm in town! My highest recommendation!

On a thanksgiving evening, being a traveler, when you don't find anything open, what do you do? Yes, Visit Ali-Baba. I traveled to Charleston from St. Louis on thanksgiving and visited AliBaba because they were the only restaurant open. I think that was my luck because the food was amazingly tasty. The hummus/Pita was delicious and the main course of lamb shank was filling as well as tasty. Too bad, I don't live in Charleston otherwise would visit this place again.

Great little gem in the middle of Daniel Island. I was on a business trip to DI for a couple weeks and must've eaten at Ali Baba 3-4 times. It's authentic and delishus. Worked my way through the menu pretty good. Of note: good, crisp falafel; tangy shawerma; grilled eggplant and the baba ganoush were all very good. Some of the dishes were a little different than other places - not wrong, just a different take - so don't be shocked if the shawerma is different than the one you just had in NYC. If there's one knock about Ali Baba is that they are a little slow during lunchtime. 3.75 stars - I'll be back.

Moving to a smallish city and finding a go-to Meditteranean joint 5 min from the office? Couldn't be more thrilled. My first test of any American Greek/Med spot is the gyro of course. Baba scores 5* right there - judging on a. price ($6.50... common thats fast food range) b. meat - must be cooked on a rotisserie to be the real deal c. tziki suace - pretty standard but thats fine by me While the gyro's been amazing time and time again, I keep finding myself going back to the Shawarma and Hummus platter ($7.99). I'm indian and therefore naturally obsessed with spices - Give it a shot... if you can handle the heat.

Nice place. It's an order at the counter and they bring to your table place. Not cheap, but good portions. The food seems pretty authentic mediterranean with a decent variety of kebabs, wraps, salads and paninis. Directly across from the Tennis Stadium on Daniel island so very convenient if you're going to an event there. Mostly indoor seating, with a few outside tables. I wouldn't seek it out, but would stop in again.

I'm a breast man - so anytime I'm ordering a dish with chicken, I want to know if I'm going to see some breast. Entering Ali Baba for the first time, and seeing all sorts of potentially amazing chicken choices - kebab, shawarma, grilled chicken, etc. - it was just about the first question out of my mouth: "So is the chicken shawarma white meat or dark meat?" Apparently I was the first person who'd ever asked this. The young girl behind the counter (who appeared to be there on loan from a nearby surf shop) was completely baffled by the question. "It's beef or chicken." I tried the question again and got a long puzzled look followed by a guess: "I think it might be white." OK, chicken is OFF the menu. I asked several other questions, such as how to order the various sides displayed under glass, but the girl was unable to answer any of my questions. When my wife asked what a Kibbeh is, we were told "ummm I think it's like this THING and it has some meat in it." We decided to pass on the "thing with meat in it." We ended up scrapping any adventurous plans, and just ordered gyros. I got the beef and my wife the chicken. My gyro was fine, but the "chicken" was a weird rubbery substance that my wife claimed smelled like dog. Personally, I thought it smelled like old gym socks, not dog, but I wasn't going to argue. She ate the rice and veggies but skipped the rubber chicken. Ultimately, the food is about what you'd find at any fast food Greek place - but at a restaurant with numerous items unfamiliar to many people, having knowledgable, friendly help is CRUCIAL for success. They certainly need to have the manager invest some time in training the help. With so many other options, including the great Ali Baba place (which I don't think is affiliated with this chain) over in Mt Pleasant, I see little reason to gamble on this location again.

This is a nice little lunch stop if you work or live on Daniel Island. I recently stopped in and had a Gyro Platter. I must say the tabouli and hummus were both really good. The gyro meat itself was such that it did not appear as though they have their own rotisserie spit, and might just buy in the sliced meat blend. The pita was a little dense and greasy (maybe because the gyro meat was sitting on top of it) but all in all it was good stuff.

    (3)
  • Jeff J.

Great varieties and all are tasty! Hummus is good and the beef and chicken dishes are very good. All authentic and staff is over the top friendly and on top of everything for you.

Ali Baba serves up some great Mediterranean food; probably some of the best in Charleston, it's one of the better dining choices of the few on Daniel Island. I have been here several times and have never been disappointed by the food, it's always been delicious. Some of my previous dining choices that I recommend include the Falafel Sandwich, Gyro Plate, Spicy Feta Gyro, and Spicy Feta Chicken Wrap; with sides of hummus and tabouli. Service here has always been very friendly and helpful, but expect to wait a little while for your food to be prepared. They make everything fresh and it is worth the wait.

Love the service and delicious, big portion food. I visit my niece on DI about every 3 months and have to eat or do take out at least once.

I'm ashamed at how often I go to Ali Baba Deli & Catering. Wait, no I'm not -- I'm proud! If you're looking for extremely fresh Mediterranean food, for either dine-in or take out, this is your place. Everything I've ever had at Ali Baba has been great and served by such friendly, always smiling employees. This family-run restaurant is full of options for both meat eaters and vegetarians. Vegan? Oh yeah, they cover that too. While you can get your standard gyro, hummus, and falafel, I highly recommend choosing something from the deli case. As you walk in, two large cases display what appears to be a Mediterranean feast all prepared just for you. But alas, it's for you and anyone willing to trek over to Daniel Island to eat. (Lucky me, I work at Blackbaud!) My favorites: hearts of palm salad, grilled vegetables, Jasmine chicken wrap, muhammara (a pomegranate walnut dip), and foul madamas (fava beans, tomatoes, feta, parsley.) If you're into that sort of thing, check out the hookah. Or just eat and say you did.

I'm never disappointed when I eat at Ali Baba. I recently tried the Mixed Grilled Platter which came with lamb gyro and grilled chicken souvlaki and all I can say is that I wish I had more. The price might be a little expensive but you get what you pay for, so its worth it.

  • Kat R.

This place was pretty good with a few grievances. The cold sides were all in the display case and looked amazing. The sides I had with my meal were tabouli and hummus. Both tasted fresh. I would love to just buy a big sampler of sides since they all looked so good. The main part of my meal was a chicken gyro. I thought this was suppose to be assembled on a pita as a sandwich, but instead they laid it on top of pieces of pita that were meant for dipping in hummus. I felt short changed by that. I got my food to go and thank goodness I checked for utensils before I left, because they didn't bother putting any in. If they could fix those things it would have been 5 stars.

food smells bad and there were hairs in a previous meal. service was excellent but i was forced to belly dance with the waitresses. it was very awkward and i dont feel comfortable returning. also the prices are low and a wide selection of food which non of it is good. you can tell that prices reflect the quality of the food.

My husband and I have been to Ali Baba a few times and I'm not sure why I never reviewed it (thanks yelp for reminding me to!). It's definitely one of the better restaurants on Daniel Island, and we always enjoy it. The portions are really big and the prices are a great deal. The employees are nice and will answer all your questions, and the food's delicious. My favorite thing to order is the gyro that contains both falafel and hummus.

This is the ghost of Christmas Future (or past if you read my previous review of this place) I've come back to this year to remind you that this is THE most authentic Lebanese/(Mediterranean) food you fill find in the Charleston area. Not only that, but when you try dishes like their Shawerma (ohh... the shawerma), tabouli, and more... you will actually be marginally cursed. In that - you'll forever be comparing that dish you just rinsed off your palate at whatever Mediterranean restaurant... with what you savored that one day at Ali Baba on Daniel Island. And that is why I'm your Jacob Marley - bearing those locks, mini-safes and chains, and hoping you'll avoid this mess I'm in. The mess, being how I can get 600 miles back to Charleston to maw down another plate. If you are in the Charleston area with an interest in Mediterranean food, go for Ali Baba. 1) They nail every recipe - let's take tabouli for example. Since Ali Baba I've literally tried it at 10 different restaurants. They either go overly-heavy on the bulgur to save prep time, or it ends up being an overly-lemony wet mess. Ali Baba karate-chops those fools - parsley-heavy w/ very light seasonings to let the freshness crackle right through. This is an absolutely perfect compliment to any dish on their menu and a palette-cleanser for a fresh finish to the meal. Let's also take some specialty dishes as a better example. Their Shawerma is literally NOTHING (and I absolutely hate all caps) like that dish in any other town. Everywhere else I try it (on this side of the Atlantic), it is either some weird dry seasoning mix or that same weird dry seasoning mix applied via saute. wut? The taste isn't even in the same ballpark - it's like giving you dry basil to chew and then fresh globe basil. You get what I'm saying - authentic recipe is actually pretty simple (marinade + cone), and you will enjoy the rollercoaster of your 1st time trying it at Ali Baba. I know "roller coaster" isn't the best lead-in, but you will see what I mean. 1st bite, 4th bite, 15th bite, 30th bite, calling food channel. 2) They're friendly It's been a couple years so maybe they ended up catching what Dizzle-Izzle folks desire from their service. If not - who cares. The owner is awesome & staff as well - just have to know middle-eastern (most of the staff seemed more caucasus but whatever) personalities. Sweet as peaches is what I'm saying - more friendly than the average Charlestonian, and I will defend our town to it's fiery death. 3) Location Wait - what - it's not downtown. Yeah. I love downtown, too - but there are other parts to Charleston. Ever seen wind hit a tree about 4 stories high and probably see 100,000 flower petals shower down on you in a sunset with a backdrop of golden reeds (because it's fall - yeah... flowers blooming in the fall)? Charleston is like that. People who live here do a "ho hum", but if you're not from here or like me - just moved away - you reconsider the magic And that little (and I really do mean little) pop around 526 to Daniel Island is worth the trek. Really do read my previous review of this joint, because all of that still applies as well.

    (5)
  • Hana M.

If I am ever working in the 526 area, I like to go here to treat myself - there are so many options, and this is especially wonderful if you are a vegetarian or have some other dietary restrictions. My favorite dishes are Foul Medammas, roasted eggplant, and Heart of palm salad. But I still have at least 8 things I haven't tried, and I will! I haven't seen most of these dishes since my hidden gem dinning days of NYC - which is why I really love this place! In an area with little diversity, it's easy to half-ass the menu or americanize entirely. Ali baba keeps a high standard of authenticity.

My husband and I went here for dinner and ordered two lamb gyro platters when we probably should have just split one. They give you a ton of food! The babaganoush, hummus, lamb gyros, and tabouli salad are fabulous. Only 1 star off because I wish they had more of a "sit down" atmosphere. Strikes me as more of a fast food setup. The owner is so nice and the service was great. Thank you for an on-point Mediterranean food experience here in South Carolina!

  • Victoria P.

Every time I go here, the food always seems to amaze me. It is always so fresh and savory with every bite. They also give you a lot of food for your money and you will have some to take home.

Gyro tray to go for the family and friends and it was excellent. Their various salads are great too. Perfect for a get together. Highly recommend

  • Saba S.

Chicken Shawarma sandwich was fantastic. The chicken was supple and the taziki sauce was great with the sandwich. The bread didn't taste home made, but was good enough within the aluminum foil by the time i got home (soft and flavorful from the contents). The Babaganoosh was okay. Seems like they put a lot of olives in it and I don't like olives. In either case, the eggplant and texture were great. The garlic is strong and the addition of hot sauce on the food is a nice touch.

I've been here many times and it's always good. Large portions and very authentic Mediterranean style food. I am Greek and grew up on very similar food, I believe the owner is Lebanese. So if you don't like authentic Mediterranean food you may be disappointed but you can still probably find something you like. I like everything I have tried, a few of my favorites are; the spicy pesto chicken wrap, any kabob, chicken shwarma. The sides are all really good too. Fair price and Large Portions make me have to give this place a 5. It's easily my favorite "dinner to-go" place on our little Island.

    (5)
  • HK M.

The food here is good. Service is fast. The restaurant itself is a little bland, but it's more of a deli type of place so that is to be expected. I recommend the gyros. I usually get the lamb and it's delicious. The staff is very friendly. If you don't understand something on the menu or want to know the ingredient in something, they are more than happy to help. As far as the things in the deli go, I've had better Mediterranean and I've had worse. If you live on Daniel Island, this is definitely a place you need to try at least once. If you are new to Mediterranean food then go with a gyro to ease into it. Some of the flavors can be very...strong, powerful...Mediterranean. Feeling adventurous? Try the grape leaves. I hate them, but my husband loves them! So, you never know until you try it! Tip: go here for lunch, a quick dinner or take out

What great flavors! Ordered the Grilled Veggie Pita and man was it delish! Grilled squash, zucchini, roasted peppers, mushrooms, and bell peppers with lettuce, tomato, onion and feta! Served with a Fattoush salad. My mouth danced! The two women seated at a nearby table kept making the Mmmmm sound with every bite they took...my sentiments exactly! This is a small Mediterranean Deli on Daniel Island with very fresh food and nice staff! I will return!

  • Sheri Y.

It was a heaven of vegetarian. You have selections of vegetables and salads. I don't remember their names but they are all labeled well on the display. I ordered the chicken kabob platter. Chicken is great, bread and rice are good (it is very good portion). I like to have options and wish I have time to try them all.

  • Maya M.

I have eaten here three times in the last week (granted, I'm traveling and can't cook for myself right now). The food is healthy, made-to-order and it tastes really good. This isn't fast-food though; expect to wait fifteen minutes for your food even though at first glance, it seems like the type of place that could turn your order around in less than five. Prices are cheap too! I would say for healthy, tasty cheap options this is the place to go on Daniel Island.

    (4)
  • James T.

What needs to be said other than this place is fantastical. Quick, priced reasonably well, and vegan friendly! Also, it's a good shift from a lot of the usual fare that's located on Daniel Island. The only thing missing...some vino!!

  • Matt D.

This is my favorite place to eat at in the Charleston area. The ambiance is awesome, and the food is even better! They have the best gyros in South Carolina!

I love this place! The food is amazing. The staff is very friendly, the place is always clean, especially the bathroom, and I never leave hungry. If you have a chance, it is a must try. And, if you have never tried Mediterranean food and the menu looks confusing, as it did for me, don't turn around and leave just ask the staff, they are very helpful and will answer any questions you may have. Believe me it is well worth it! Can't wait for my next visit!!!

Nice find in Daniel Island. Stopped by for some to-go items and was pleased by the clean, airy bright space and the large deli case with items ranging from Kibbi to Baba Ganoush, Hearts of Palm salad and much more. Ordered several items for take out with some Pita bread. --Creamy, delish Hummus --Tangy, smoky, chunky Baba Ganoush --Tasty chicken salad with a touch of honey --Fresh dolmades Can't wait to head back for Deli case tasting round 2!

Headed over for lunch after reading reviews on yelp. The food was amazing! Hubby and I ate everything on our plates and now we're stuffed. Especially recommend the red pepper hummus and the roasted eggplant. Who needs more than 4 pieces of pita? It just takes up room in my stomach where I could be putting more amazing Greek goodness. I already want to go back to try the falafel.

  • Heather G.

Ali Baba is great! We drive out to Daniel Island every few weeks just to eat here. They make the best Baba Ghanoush I have ever eaten to date. its simple, smoky, creamy, nutty and delicious. Their combo platter is a great deal too. You can pick 2 or 3 items from the case. If you get this option and you eat meat, make one of your choices the Ali Baba special chicken wrap. Its only in the case and its delicious. I like mine dipped in tzatziki. Their couscous is also really good, with a lot of sweet/savory and vegetables (think raisins and capers - so good!). And who can resist finishing off lunch with some baklava? Walnut or pistachio, its all good!!

  • Jamie M.

We wanted to grab some take out for lunch but a lot of the places nearby didn't open until noon. We didn't really want to hang around for an extra 30 minutes so when we saw Ali Baba was open already we decided to give them a try. I ordered the grilled chicken panini ($8.50) that came with a greek salad. My boyfriend ordered the gyros platter ($7.99), which comes with hummus and tabouli. We had to wait about 20 minutes for our take out order so they gave him some free extra lamb. I would've preferred that they gave us more pita since we already had plenty of lamb. But for his gyro and those two sides they only gave him four little pita triangles. How does one make a gyro and still have pita leftover for dipping?! I'd recommend ordering some more pita if you're carb hounds like us. Other than the lack of pita we didn't really have any complaints. The hummus was pretty standard...the tabouli had a lot more texture than I'm used to, the other places I go must skimp on the bulghur. Their pistachio baklava was really nummy for dessert.

  • Stacey S.

When Ali Baba opened, I was a huge fan and would have given it 4 stars. However, as crowds dwindled, so did the "fresh" food. Everything is pre-prepared now and sitting in cases or behind the counter just waiting to be dished out. I liked the made-to-order freshness that they offered in the beginning better. Its okay, reasonably priced, but not fresh!

Ali Baba opened about a month ago and has been a HIT with almost everyone I know. I went on the second night they opened and experienced some expected growing pains in a new restaurant. I'm sure when I go again and dine in my experience will be better and I'll update my rating. The food itself is great. Very authentic and good selection. The chicken swarma is my favorite though lots of my friends swear by the gyro platters. The decor is simple and pleasing to the eye. We're all hoping Ali Baba makes it as restaurants on Daniel Island tend to bite it in the first year. This place is worth you swinging through Daniel Island sometime and is DEFINITELY worth residents stopping for dinner one night.

This is the only place I go to have lunch on Daniel Island. I always do the choose 3 from the deli case. I loooove the Heart of Palm salad, Mediterranean rice and grilled chicken salad. It comes with pita bread and tazaki for $8.99. It would be 7.99 if I dd choose 3 without a meat. The staff are all extremely friendly and work quickly to get your food to your table as quickly as possible. The restaurant serves gyros and other traditional foods, but I am reaalllly stuck on the deli case menu and have been for the past 1.5 years of working on Daniel Island. Hummas, Rice, tabbouli, eggplant dishes, etc. It really is delicious. The only think really lacking is the atmosphere. It's pretty bland, but the food is excellent. They have hookahs available for an additional charge as well. Also, they have Mediterranean desserts that are great too. I hate that this place is located on Daniel Island, which is pretty inconvenient for the majority of Charleston. I live on Johns Island and am grateful that I can get food here while at work. Even when I switch jobs, I will make the trek up there, just for this place. It FAR exceeds anything sold at Tabbouli downtown. Don't bother going there if you want anything worth a darn.

Oh yes, we talk about this place all the time. We were there during an Old School Funk Fest. The food is the best Greek place I've been to. The combo platter is the choice to get, very tasty. The owner was nice, explaining different type of foods and what was in them, I appreciate that attention very much. We will be back again. Make sure it's open before you go, it's worth it. It's no longer Greek to me, lol.

I'm from Southern California and love really good Persian and Mediterranean food and it was awesome to find one in Charleston. The owner is really nice. The food at Ali Baba is great. I love their kabobs and schwarmas; however, i wish they would have some options in their kabob meals where you can add an extra kabob for a few bucks.

Greek Cuisine

Greek food is a fine melody of the finest pressed olive oil, fresh fermented bread, colorful vegetables, juicy meat, sea food all cooked in spices and fresh rosemary. The people from Greek were great scholars who aimed to excel in everything they do. The results are quite visible in their food as they are the inventors of olive oil which is beneficial to health.
